Reframing Prayer: From Monologue to Dialogue

Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know. Jeremiah 33:3 NKJV

Most of us treat prayer like a voicemail we’re leaving for a very busy person: we talk fast, hit the highlights, and hang up, hoping someone actually listens to the recording. We’ve been taught that prayer is something we do—a discipline to master or a box to check off a spiritual to-do list. But when the words run dry, and the checklist guilt sets in, prayer starts to feel less like a lifeline and more like a heavy lift.

What if we stopped trying to find the right words and started listening for them instead? The secret to a vibrant prayer life isn’t discovering a secret technique; it’s shifting the entire framework from a monologue to a dialogue. As we often say in Refining Ministry, it’s about moving past the mechanics and into the intimacy.

“It is not about mastering a technique. It’s about deepening your intimate relationship with God and finding a new level of conversing with Him.”

If you’ve ever felt “wordless,” or if your spiritual life feels more like a textbook study than a living relationship, it’s time to reframe the conversation. It’s time to Sit, Soak, and Saturate.

Here are three invitations to help you stop performing and start conversing.

1. The Invitation to Echo: The Bible is your prayer book. When you find yourself wordless or feeling like your prayers are flat, look to the authors of Scripture as your personal tutors.

  • How to do it: Don’t just read the words; inhabit them. Add your name.
  • The Echo: Let David’s raw cries in the Psalms become your cries. Let Paul’s infectious joy in his epistles become your joy.
  • The Result: Scripture navigates the conversation for you, providing the vocabulary for your heart’s deepest needs.

This may be the perfect avenue when you feel you cannot muster the words. Let God’s Word provide.

2. The Invitation to Converse: We often treat the Bible like a textbook to be studied rather than a conversation to be joined. Let your time in God’s Word open a door to having a conversation with Him.

  • The Cycle: God speaks through the Scripture. Breathe in His truth and exhale your prayer based on the Holy Spirit’s prompting.
  • Turn the Verse into a Response:
    • Does it touch a wound? Turn it into a petition for healing.
    • Does it show God’s glory? Turn it into an act of worship.
    • Does it call for action? Ask for the strength to bring it to fruition.

Remember, the subject matter does not have to be only about you. Think about your friends, family, acquaintances, and the world itself. The realm is broad. Let the Bible direct your thoughts and prayer topics.

3. The Invitation to Focus: Let the Word define the topic. Scripture acts as a diagnostic tool, bringing to the surface what needs to be discussed with the Father. It prevents “squirrely” or distracted prayers by giving you a clear anchor.

When the Word reveals…Turn your prayer toward…
Heavy WeightsHealth, finances, or relationship struggles.
Recurring SinConfession and the power to “shake it.”
God’s PromisesBold requests and spiritual battles.
His CharacterThankfulness and intentional adoration.

One of the primary habits we carry out through Refining Ministry is studying one chapter a week. Then, as we study the chapter in-depth throughout the week, the Holy Spirit usually brings one verse to light. It is this verse that directs our focus and opens the door to a conversation with God. We let this verse deepen our spiritual walk and become a part of our daily lives before rushing to the next chapter.

Christians often feel guilty for not doing all things every day: reading the daily devotional, having private Bible reading, spending time in prayer, etc. God doesn’t expect us to check all the boxes every day. He doesn’t want to be a checklist-He wants to be in a relationship with you. Walking hand in hand, doing life together.

SIT-SOAK-SATURATE your life one verse and one prayer at a time.

A Visual of going BEYOND the typography

BEYOND the typography
to letting Scripture saturate your life

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4 (NIV)

Ponder this if you will…

In a moment’s notice, we can access the Bible on our phone, bookmark passages, and even magnify text if need be. We are blessed with the engagement opportunities afforded to us left and right. It is as painless as downloading an app. Free at that! WOW! Every mode luring each believer to go beyond the typography.

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

Joshua 1:8 (NIV)

What more could we desire? A prized prize and adored adornment can be displayed beyond a coffee table. We can showcase it on every device we own and pull up any passage regardless of our location. We can even screenshot verses of interest in the middle of a sermon and share it immediately on social media.

What a welcoming welcome. An opportunity to see past the layout we choose. A chance to experience the life-changing power the words hold. An open invitation to go beyond the charming print. An ability to interact with Scripture through exceeding levels of availability far outweighing anything previously offered. Oh, how attractive, tantalizing, and downright alluring.

Scripture Notebooking can do that for YOU!

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.

YADA: How do you define “to know” God?

We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 1 John 4:16 (NIV)

Yada! A term I equate with true success in my life. This word ranks high on my favorite list yet, it has not always been this way.

Yada is a Hebrew word meaning “to know”. I love learning! So, it probably doesn’t come as a shock for those who know me to hear me state my deep feeling for this term. However, there is more to this four-letter word in my life than the surface level.

Visually, the world sees me craving information and textual knowledge. There is no denying it-I do. I would even go so far as to say it has opened the door to a deeper meaning of Yada in my life. This “to know” has placed me on a journey to go beyond textual knowledge of the LORD and really “know” Him for who He is. But remember, I said it hasn’t always been this way.

For many years, my “to know” was for my success. Then my intellectual knowledge of the LORD began transforming my heart and allowing me to redefine what it means to really “know”. Also, I began pursing my definition of “yada” for God’s glory and not my own.

By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. 1 John 2:3 (NIV)

Due to failures in life and finding myself at rock bottom, spiritual wisdom was gained. I realized that the most important thing in my life was a growing relationship with the LORD. The life change I had to make was to go beyond periodically meeting with God to walking with Him 24/7. Although I still fall short at times, I have set a goal to live with the LORD right beside every moment-because He is.

So, what did this require of me? I have had to learn to say good morning every day, turn to Him first in all circumstances good or bad, trust in His promises, have faith in His attributes, and love Him on a level of complete obedience and count it as an honor. Let me just say-this is a struggle within my flesh, and I continually fight against “gods” taking the LORD’s place.

The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. 1 John 4:8 (NIV)

Making God my firm foundation has been a journey. My desperation caused me to begin taking my relationship with the LORD to new heights and to realize it is an ongoing process. I had to learn to live my life with an open Bible, feed on His Word, and let the Holy Spirit lead. (Boy, that sounds easy when I see those words on paper!)

The difference between “to know” and “TO KNOW!” has been eye opening. My new “yada” has taken me from meeting with God periodically to walking with the lover of my soul continually. The LORD wants this for everyone. He loves us exponentially and craves for us to walk closely with Him in a relationship different from all others. This takes us beyond intellectual textbook knowledge to a deep personal commitment that transforms our heart, mind, and soul.

And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. 1 John 5:20 (NIV)

Refinement Ministry exist because of this life changing concept. The goal of the Bible studies, retreats, workshops, etc. is to support spiritual maturity. Hey, we are just ordinary, everyday people just like you who want to seek out this journey with like-minded Christians. We believe in community and the importance of sharing experiences, wisdom, and perspective with each other.

What is your definition of yada? Are you looking for ways to know God on a more intimate level? If so, we invite you to be a part of one of our Bible studies online, upcoming getaways, or weekend workshops. 2022 is dedicated to helping others go beyond text knowledge to intimate knowledge of who GOD IS and experience this through Scripture Notebooking!

We are so excited to share this beautiful “yada” definition with you. Trust me when I say, it is life changing!

By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; 1 John 4:2 (NIV)

When it reaches out and grabs you

For the Lord disciplines those He loves, and He punishes each one He accepts as his child. As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as His own children. Who ever heard of a child who is never disciplined by its father? Hebrews 12:6-7 (NLT)

It is up to us to stay in His Word and pay close attention to His call. When we are plugged into God, we will know His voice. John 10: 27 says, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” It is a mutual recognition. The Spirit of truth prompts us to dig deeper into the verse/s which personally stand out in order to fully digest scripture. He bids us to apply it to our circumstances and claim it over our lives and those around us.

Let me share one of my attention moments with you.

During my difficult season of life, I began questioning if my faith was real. Why would I feel so helpless if I was truly a child of God? Honestly, this was a dark period of my soul. I was struggling for answers and asking God why over and over and over. Nevertheless, I continued to attend church, show up for small group, and worship the Lord through song.

One particular Sunday morning, the pastor was preaching from 1 Corinthians to shed light on the faults we continue to exhibit like those addressed by Paul with the church in Corinth. As the pastor read and explored chapter 4, he began examining and analyzing reasons we can become self-absorbed and arrogant. I was curious how he would deliver his closing comments. While summarizing the various points of the sermon, he read 1 Corinthians 4:20-21. I leaned in and fixed my mind on what I anticipated to be his main point. Like in many churches, the words appeared on the screen: For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.  What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline, or shall I come in love and with a gentle spirit? It was like fireworks on the fourth of July. I saw those words and knew God was talking directly to me. I went straight to my iPad, opened the notes app, and typed out the verses.

What? You aren’t seeing fireworks too? Perhaps you can’t even imagine a bad sparkler. Why? Because God personally luminated this particular scripture at that very moment just for me. He desired my attention. The Lord removed all distractions in my mind and spoke loud and clear while I was fully present in an environment focused on Him. Upon hearing those scriptures, my question of faith was answered.

It became clear that this dark valley was a discipline gorge. God revealed my lack of engagement in His Word and the Holy Spirit had definitely exposed my deficiency. When seeing those words, I realized I had not placed myself in the Lord’s text. I was lacking the ability to fully submit to His great power because my life wasn’t drenched in scripture. For all those years, I had viewed the bible as talk uttered by God without acknowledging the supernatural force, potency, and capability it possessed. This was God’s invitation to infuse my life with scripture. He welcomed me to a completely different way of thinking and living. His empowerment lured me to seek Him on a more intimate level and to bring my life under His absolute authority.

This was my attention moment which exposed me to a personal definition of submission.

How has God used scripture to grab your attention?
